- Yes There are more churches per square foot more then anywhere in the world.
- DJ Kool Herc was a Jamaican who was deemed responsible for the start of hip-hop music in the U.S
- When someone passes in Jamaica they have a wake called 9 night ( which is family & friends coming together for nine nights normally at the home ( dead yard) of the person who has passed. People come together to play music, talk and remember the person and eat food, this all leads up the the burial.
- The Author Ian Fleming bought a house in Ocho Rios Which he called Goldeneye, he was here he created the character 007 James Bond
- Jamaica’s motto is “out of many, one people” from the original Arawak Indians to the Africans who were kidnapped and forced into slavery, the chinese and Indian indentured workers, alongside all the other nationalities English, Irish, Scottish, Spanish, Jewish, Germans. The biggest ethnicity in Jamcia are the descendants of Africa
- There are a lot of Cuban Doctors and teachers in Jamaica, many Jamaican Doctors obtained their Doctor training in Cuba at the ELAM medical school which trains doctors from all over the Caribbean, Africa and other 3rd world countries ( for free) as long as they go back to their countries after completion of their training and give 2 years medical service to their community, (before they think about going off to the big capitalist countries to make their fortune)
- For the most part, a large percentage of Jamaicans speak their mind, their very free and like to ( talk da ting) they don’t mean to be offensive, they just don’t hide what they want to say, it’s the culture
- Jamaican proverbs really stem from the root of their African ancestors, there are hundreds of Jamaican proverbs and the elders have a way to slide one into various conversational topics
- “Rock stone a river bottom cyaan know sun hot” meaning = He who feels it knows it. “Puss and dawg nuh have di same luck
meaning = Some people are luckier than others. Never let the right hand no what the left hand ah do - meaning it’s not always good to let everyone know everything you plan to do”
- Only a small percentage of Jamaican population smoke ganja and its not legal. Furthermore not all Rastas smoke ganja
- Although Dancehall music is a big part of Jamaican culture, not all Jamaicans listen to dancehall or go to dancehall parties
- Not all Jamaicans are gangstas as portrayed in dancehall movies, or given the gangsta narrative by the West regarding Jamaicans
- Music really does play a large part in Jamaican society and you will hear it all the time from one place or another, even just walking down the road you may hear the winds carrying the music from somewhere in the distant. Jamaicans do appreciate all types of music
